VCD ATHLETIC PROGRESS TO ENGLISH NATIONAL FINAL
VCD Athletic from Kent FA won the Tesco Cup Southern Regional Final on Saturday April 19 in Putney. The team will now advance to the English National Final of the Tesco Cup to be held at the Walkers Stadium, Leicester on Sunday May 17. After a tense final against Boca Youth FC from London, VCD Athletic won 4-2 on penalties.
Former England and Chelsea star Kerry Dixon, and England women's player Casey Stoney, both attended the event in Putney and selected Billy Hendy from BOCA Youth FC as ‘Player of the Tournament' for his impressive performance. Despite losing 2-4 on penalties to VCD Athletic in the Final, BOCA Youth went undefeated in the round robin stage of the tournament, not conceding a single goal.
Kerry Dixon also selected the following players to receive awards:
Best Goalkeeper: Callum Murphy (BOCA Youth FC)
Best Defender: Ashley Long (VCD Athletic)
Best Midfielder: Lewis Bradford (Three Bridges)
Best Forward: Louie Covello (Parkfield Youth)
Kerry Dixon commented: ‘The Tesco Cup is a fantastic initiative to encourage kids to play football and the standard of play in Putney has been really good. Over 60,000 youngsters across the country have taken part in the competition so far which shows what a success it is and how well the teams who reached the Southern Regional Final have done.'
