Stokesley FC crowned Tesco Cup Champions

Stokesley FC U13 boys, representing England, were crowned UK champions at the Tesco Cup football final held at the Reebok Stadium on Sunday. The team took the honours after a 4-0 win against Landore Colts from Wales.

In a tense semi-final, Stokesley FC beat 2008 Champions Linfield FC 9-8 on penalties. The team then enjoyed an emphatic win against Landore Colts in the final.

Former Republic of Ireland player Andy Townsend and England women's goalkeeper Rachel Brown both attended the event and selected William Muir from Stokesley as ‘Defender of the tournament' for his impressive performance on the pitch.

Team Manager Kevan Howe, said, ‘It is amazing to think we are a team from a small town in Yorkshire and have progressed through the County, Regional and National stages to become UK champions. The boys have really enjoyed playing in the Tesco Cup competition and playing in the Reebok Stadium has been amazing for the team. It is a fantastic initiative and I hope it continues to grow year on year.'

Andy Towsend and Rachel Brown also chose the following players for individual awards:

Best Goalkeeper: Aaron Whitelock ( Landore Colts)
Best Defender: William Muir (Stokesley)
Best Midfielder: Christian Stewart (Linfield FC)
Best Forward: Connor Brydon (Tynecastle)
Player of the tournament: Josh Davies (Landore Colts)
