Daily Express supports Tesco Cup Football

The nation's leading grassroots football competition, The Tesco Cup, has today joined forces with leading national newspaper, the Daily Express to promote the final stages of the 2010 tournament, which unites over 60,000 youngsters from around the UK.

The media partnership, which will launch this week to coincide with the first regional finals of the competition, will give young footballers the chance to see their name in print alongside their footballing heroes. Full match reports following the regional, national and UK finals will also be posted online via the newspaper's website. Now in its fifth year, The Tesco Cup is a home nations grassroots football competition, open to three age groups, U13 boys, U14 girls and U16 girls. Run in conjunction with the FA and local communities, it is part of a wider commitment from Tesco to encourage healthy living.

Over 3,600 teams entered the 2010 Tesco Cup which began in September 2009. Following the completion of the County Cup Finals, the teams have since been reduced to less than 50 per age group. The remaining teams will now progress through to the regional and national stages of the competition, culminating in a chance to represent England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales in the UK final, at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton on Sunday May 16.

Josh Hardie, Head of Corporate Responsibility at Tesco said, ‘We are delighted to receive the support of the Daily Express as we continue to grow the Tesco Cup competition year on year. The competition means a great deal to these young players and to have their achievements recognised in a national newspaper, is sure to give them a great sense of pride.”

Bill Bradshaw, Sports Editor at the Daily Express commented, ‘The Daily Express is thrilled to be supporting the Tesco Cup, a competition which is of great benefit for the development of grassroots football in the UK. We look forward to working closely with Tesco, to help promote the tournament and encourage more youngsters to compete in our national game.'
