Mostyn Dragons FC U13 Boys Win Tesco Cup Welsh National Final
Mostyn Dragons FC from North Wales Coast were victorious at the Tesco Cup Welsh National Final in Cardiff this weekend. The team, who put in a great performance, will now represent Wales at the UK Final, to be held at the Reebok stadium, Bolton on May 16.
Mostyn Dragons FC managed to progress through their group unbeaten, winning their first game 2-0 and drawing their second 0-0, which saw them finish on top with 4 points. In an exciting final the ‘Dragons' defeated Cogan Coronations, the South Wales representatives, 2-1.
Welsh International and Cardiff City FC star Joe Ledley attended the event in Cardiff, fresh from his winning goal against QPR on Saturday, which secured Cardiff City FC a playoff place at the end of the season.
At the tournament Ledley chose talented player Joshua Robertson, from Mostyn as Forward of the Tournament, for his impressive performances throughout the day which included the winning cup final goal.
Team Manager Aled Jones commented ‘It's great achievement for the lads, they played excellently all through the tournament and we are really honoured to representing Wales at the Reebok Stadium.'
Joe Ledley commented: ‘It's great to be involved with the Tesco Cup for the first time. As a very young player I played at this exact same ground with the academy, so it's really nice coming back and watching so many young talented footballers. A tournament like the Tesco Cup didn't exist when I was involved in grassroots football, so this is a fantastic opportunity for young footballers across the UK.'
The Tesco Cup is part of a wider commitment from Tesco to encourage children to get involved in sport. Now in its fifth year, Tesco works in conjunction with the FA and local communities to help improve the football skills of young players.
Tesco Cup teams compete at County and then Regional level (area level in Wales) in a bid to become National Champions and ultimately, to represent their country at the UK Final. The National Winners, in each age category, from England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland will play in the UK Final to be held at the Reebok Stadium, Bolton - the home of Bolton Wanderers – on Sunday May 16, 2010, where they will fight it out to become UK Champions.
